Eat the Salmon Heart?

Canadian Princess Resort - August 2, 2013

It is tradition and considered good luck to eat the heart of the first Chinook salmon you catch.  It sounds disgusting, but it is the true initiation into the world of salmon sport fishing.  After landing her salmon Catch of the Day, Ann Coss did just that.

“Yeah, I ate the heart of the salmon...the potato chips really helped!” Ann told dock staff.  “The fishing was amazing, we felt well looked after and Yarrow was amazing!

Her catch weighed 22lbs-01oz.  Ann was fishing on a Boston Whaler Outrage charter with her boyfriend Ron, visiting from the Lower Mainland.  Here is Ann and Ron with their total catch.

Between the two of them, Ann and Ron caught three salmon and two halibut.  The most unusual thing they reel up was a dog fish, but they released that one.  Ron has fished with other Oak Bay Marine Group properties, specifically with the Salmon Seeker in Haida Gwaii.  This was the first time Anne had been fishing on the ocean and the first for both of them at the Canadian Princess.

We had another big salmon come in that day.  Greg Held caught a 20lbs-08oz salmon aboard the Chinook Princess, landing him the Catch of the Day for Delta Cruiser charters.  We also have had several large ling cods come to the docks over the last week or so.  These less-than-beautiful giants make great beer battered fish fillets served with chips and tartar sauce.  The latest big ling cod weighed 32lbs-06oz.

We are approaching the long weekend and look forward to three full days of fishing fun.  A new month has started which mean the slate is wiped clean on the Ucluelet Salmon Ladder Derby ladder board welcoming new catches for the month of August.  Purchase your derby ticket at the Front Desk and you could win thousands in monthly cash and prizes.  Every fish on the ladder in August will be invited to the Fish Off on the Labour Day long weekend.  There are 65 spots so you have a big chance of making it to the big competition weekend.  All net proceeds of the Ucluelet Salmon Ladder Derby benefit local salmon enhancement projects.  For more information visit
