It was about this time last year when I witnessed the greatest whale show I have ever seen on the west coast. We saw two humpback whales having a great time jumping and breaching completely out of the water for over half an hour. They would slap their tails, roll in the water, wave with their fins, and come flying out of the water landing back down with whale sized belly flops. It was an incredible experience.
September is a great time to fish in Ucluelet. During the first weeks of the September the salmon are can be quite large because, after feeding all summer, they are ready to start spawning up local streams. We have been averaging Chinook salmon in the 20 to 25 pound range, with reports of fish coming in over 30 pounds! Anglers have been catching coho salmon most days and halibut remains open. Halibut have been coming in around the 13 to 18 pound range, but we are sure we will see some bigger ones this time of year as well.
