There is a calmness at the Canadian Princess Resort. Although we are very busy hosting large groups in our accommodation and still sending out fishing and whale watching boats, the active buzz that usually lingers around the resort in the peak of summer as simmered to a very comfortable pace. Everyone around here is extremely content.
The weather has been phenomenal this month, as it usually is in September on the west coast. Every day the deck of the Canadian Princess is full of happy patrons enjoying the warm sunshine, sea breeze, and views of the Small Craft Harbour while partaking in post-fishing drinks and lunch.
The salmon have begun to spawn in nearby waterways along the coast. Coho and Chinook salmon in particular have been coming in. Although we suspect the peak of the spawn should arrive in a few days, the fish are definitely moving in this week. Anglers have been spotted fishing off of the rocky shores in Ucluelet, taking advantage of this flood of salmon.
They are still biting out on the water too! We did see a reduction of Chinook biting this month which is expected, although guests are still reeling them almost every trip! The Chinook are coming in around the 15 to 20 pound mark. We have also seen a good production of Coho salmon too. We are still sending fishing charters, available daily, on both the Delta Cruisers and the Boston Whaler Outrages. There are some great specials on right now so gather your group of fishing buddies and come out this weekend while the season lasts!
Humpback whales have been active over the last couple of weeks. Whale watching tours have been seen them frequently in Barkley Sound and near the Broken Group Islands. They are slapping their tails, waving fins, and on lucky trips breaching out of the water completely!
It is also peak bear watching season as the local black bears fill their bellies with shell fish and spawning salmon in preparation for the winter months ahead. Bears can be spotted along the eastern shores of the Ucluelet Harbour at low tide, and on the west shores of Barkley Sound. Keep your eyes peeled on the beach. Our whale watching boats will go closer to shore so you can get a better look!
Remember the Drive In and Gas Up specials are still running for both fishing and whale watching packages. We hope to see you one more time before the season ends!
