As we move into August, the fishing here on the west coast is going the way most late season fishing goes. The fishing is getting better and the salmon are getting bigger. The Ucluelet Salmon Ladder Derby has a new front runner of 49Lbs. 5 oz. by Erik Brownell. Just a few days ago, the second spot was claimed by Kelby Anderson with a 48 lb. 10 oz. Chinook. So as we continue into the second half of August and September, we’re expecting even higher numbers and we’re waiting for the day when a 50Lb. salmon is landed.
Making daily trips to the airport, I can’t help but notice that the number of totes is increasing as well. Since the Chinook, Coho, and Pinks are all running now, most individuals are able to catch a variety of fish to take home with them. One knows the fishing is good when the boats come in and the deckhands are all smiles, holding back the excitement of the day. So with a little more than a month left in our season, we’re on track to finish with a bang. Tight lines everyone.
