Young Nicolas Scoates could not have been more proud as he hauled his huge Chinook salmon around the dock last Friday afternoon. It took nearly all his strength for him to lift up the 24lbs-06oz salmon so staff of the Ucluelet Salmon Ladder Derby could take his photo and mark him down for August’s ladder.
“I am going to come back fishing every year!” exclaimed Nicolas.
We’ve seen it happen enough times here at the Canadian Princess Resort to know that once someone reels in their first big catch, they are hooked for life!
Nicolas was on a two-day fishing trip with his Dad Phil. They were fishing on a Boston Whaler Outrage charter. They were trolling near Austin Island in Barkley Sound when Nicolas landed this beautiful slab. He’ll be the first to tell you that he reeled in the fish all on his own, from the moment it took the lure until it was netted into the boat.
The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Phil Scoates demonstrated where Nicolas gets his fishing genes from the very next day when he hauled in a Tyee at Starfish. Starfish has been going off since the last weekend in July with many anglers reporting Chinook salmon weighing over 30 pounds. Phil’s Chinook weighed an even 31lbs and got him a spot on the ladder for August with the Ucluelet Salmon Ladder Derby.
The derby has announced that all fishers on the ladder for August will be invited to participate in the big Fish Off in September. This means that both of the Scoates boys will qualify for this major fishing event.
Phil told us that they are planning to return to the Ucluelet for the Fish Off. They live in Langley, BC and would love to spend another couple of days fishing on our west coast. The Canadian Princess looks forward to being their fishing charter for the Fish Off and we hope they can make it out!
I bet Nicolas is anxious to reel in another Catch of the Day!
