Today marked the second round of winners for the Ucluelet Salmon Ladder Derby this season. The top prize for June of $5000 dollars goes to Dan Koutnik. He caught a Chinook that weighed in as a Tyee at 31 pounds and 15 ounces. Mr. Koutnik was not the only winner though as the Ucluelet Salmon Ladder Derby was proud to present the Thornton Creek Hatchery with a cheque for $2000 this morning at the docks.
The Ucluelet Salmon Ladder Derby will present $2000 dollars every month from now through August to the Thornton Creek Hatchery. They will also continue to present the $5000 prize for 1st place, $2000 dollars for 2nd and $1000 dollars for 3rd on a monthly basis.
The end of the season will see a three day fish off for upwards of $10,000 dollars for both the person with the biggest fish and the hatchery. Daily tickets to participate in the derby cost $10 dollars and can be purchased at the front desk of the Canadian Princess Resort.
